What is a masquerade ball?

A masked ball, or masquerade (maschera in Italian), is a dancing event in which the participants wear a costume or disguise accompanied by a mask. This type of event was very popular during the Renaissance.

This tradition has been forgotten through the ages. However, around the world, a few initiatives have been launched to revive this dream-filled evening. These include the annual Labyrinth of Jareth masquerade ball in Los Angeles, and the masquerade ball at the Château de Versaille.

Masquerade balls are much more present in various audiovisual creations. Balls are the perfect way to meet people, or to set up a dirty trick. They are mainly to be found in period films, but also in recent productions. Emily in Paris is the latest release.

Emily in Paris

Emily in Paris is a TV series created by Darren Star and airing on Netflix from December 2021.

 

Emily is an American originally from Chicago. She moves to France, more specifically Paris, after a professional opportunity. The young woman is in for quite a culture shock. She'll have to juggle her professional life, her new friends and her love life.

 

In the latest season, one of her scenes features a masked ball. In fact, it caused quite a stir, not least because of the main character Emily's outfit, with its imposing black-and-white dress and big hat.
